I try to recommend Rectify to anyone I can, although that show never really aspired to wide appeal. I think that something else in the vein of the 70s possibly could, but Rectify is fairly light on “genre” elements despite having some mystery regarding the crime the protagonist is accused of.
The series has never resonated with me the way it seems to with many others, and your logic suggests that might be due to lacking those supposedly universal experiences (I never felt I was born into the wrong family either, contra Philip Pullman). If I had gone earlier in that day I could have seen the world premiere of McKee’s “Kindred Spirits”, and I don’t yet know which would have been the better choice. I also could have sworn that I saw Katie Rife…
If Borges had written this Jack’s rewriting of the Beatles would be even better than the Beatles.
