It’s because everyone bought the lie of the “American Dream.” The rationale is that we can’t punish the rich, because one day we might be rich. But the truth is, and has always been, that they will never let us into their little club.

While they don’t actually RUN the government, they influence it greatly. Policy makers are driven by campaign money, not the actual will of their constituents. At the end of the day, voters will gobble up propaganda. And if they need to change the will of their constituents, they move the goalposts via gerrymandering.

Because that 5% is funneling money in to the pockets of the people running government. It’s the only actual trickle-down effect we’re likely to see.
