So they had an identifiable TFA version of C-3PO to sell toys of without messing around with a much beloved design too much. Don’t get me wrong, I adored TFA, but “Oh, hello Mister Solo, did you notice my red arm? Look at it. Look at my red arm. Isn’t it red and armish?” was a clunkingly awkward moment.
