I wondered if that was happening! Do people bring it back and mention that they're confused what all the fuss is about, because they read the whole thing and didn't find any spanking scenes at all?

The Thursday Next books read best, IMHO, if you're really well read in classic and/or famous literature. The whole conceit is that they bring together all these famous literary figures who somewhat amusingly stay true to character. And the style is at least a bit denser. This one requires no real outside knowledge,

Yeah, stylistically, there's no comparison. I haven't read The Twelve yet, but The Passage is written with the scope and detail of The Stand, whereas the first of the del Toro books read like a thriller screenplay, much more interested in trying to create "boo!" moments on the page than in building a memorable world

Wouldn't be the first time. We've gotten AVC slashfic before. It's usually pretty hilarious.

Eh, it's not so much that it's annoying as that I find a more interesting question with some context than as a single nuance-free hypothetical. I'm putting it in the context of the movie (which doesn't treat the question as a simple "He did wrong"), but the other people addressing it here are similarly putting in

I acknowledge that women are more likely to be targeted for personal (rather than political) violence than men, both for sexual reasons and for dominance reasons. Which are sometimes the same thing, but these are bigger issues than the ones raised in this film. But in this specific case, it seems beside the point to
