I'm betting we were all around and watching movies seriously during the ’90s. Check tomorrow's podcast with me and Keith and Scott, which directly addresses how we all came of age as film critics in the ’90s.

I don't think there's any kind of big consensus for Vinny either pro or con. I remember it fondly as a really funny movie, but not one for the ages.

Dollhouse was on my initial list. Still my favorite Solondz by far. So ridiculously bleak, so beautifully acted.

Amores Perros is great, but it's straight-up a 2000 release. Premiered at Cannes in May 2000.

Maybe we've just seen the complaint so many times that it seems perverse to respond to any one comment, as I am here. Frankly, I don't understand it either. It was on my initial vote list, and I expected it to place reasonably well.

Also, to me at least, the book was really, really droll in a way the film completely fails to capture.

That certainly could be interesting. I'll give it some thought.

It is terrific in many ways, particularly the surreal sequences where she's being chased by that idealized, giggling version of her former self. But I've never liked that incredibly abrupt ending, with the weird wink at the camera. Satoshi Kon upped his game considerably for his later movies.

Yeah, though if you read that original novel, about all it has in common with the animated film is a giant man made of iron. The film completely left out the giant "Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon" threatening to destroy Earth. I'm not kidding.
