I always thought that part of the success WAS the B-roll level acting. It helped further the entire pulpish idea that the people themselves were scripted by the hand of the media/propaganda.

It was so good I watched all of the cartoon version too, which seemed to be an honest non-satirical action show. It works on multiple levels and space marines fighting bug aliens is good action.

If you prefer The Martian to A.I., you definitely made a wrong turn somewhere.
