It is worth it, IMHO. 70% of Japan is too mountainous to build on, and that's where you want to go. No traffic, few tolls and lots of touge.
Do it- I’ve got a 924S, and it is indeed all that. Still not hugely fast by modern standards, but plenty quick enough given the fact that there aren’t any electronic nannies.
