@tamoko: It's a little convoluted to get at first, but if you understand some Unix basics, you can create interesting desktops, with embedded feeds, widgets, etc.
@orthodoxyordeath: It's not that hard in OSX. There actual are several tools to do this. One of them is GeekTool.

Ribofunk, by Paul Di Filippo... not exactly a biotech apocalypse, but it's got some concepts that I still can't get out of my head, years after reading it.
