Your MIL sounds like the absurd one. Brides get one (if any) shower gift. If a bride has 2 showers and you actually attend one of the two, with a gift, there is NO WAY that you are somehow on the hook for a second shower gift for an event you aren't attending. Being religious doesn't automatically mean someone is a garbage person, or a Duggar wannabe or something extreme like that.
