It used to be common to sentence prisoners to hard labour, sometimes it wasn’t even labour it was just pointless, Sisyphean tasks designed to punish. And yet crime continued. Punishment isn’t a great deterrent to crime, except for people who already basically law-abiding.

Except what happens when the criminals get out? After they have been dehumanised and tortured, will they really be able to just fit back into society? It seems unlikely.

YES! When she first started to ask, I thought she wanted to swap over a small child. To which I would have had to say ‘sure’, but she wanted to sit with her husband while rando stranger sat with the kids.
