I think a lot of the animus is actually from those of us who are low level employees at companies with travel policies (or dick bosses) that insist business travel be conducted in the cheapest seats possible.

Complete agreement. My only guess is that by concentrating so hard on this particular group, the higher education world hopes that everybody will be distracted from the fact that this is happening at all times and will continue happening long after everybody has a good laugh at Aunt Becky’s expense.
