This...is...a very special and shitty take. I took my first husband’s name because my maiden name was a fucking nightmare and I wanted to be rid of it as soon as possible. There was nothing patriarchal involved.

Yep. My dad went to school, but my mom’s side of the family is still in Appalachia, still being mad about there being no coal jobs, and faulting me because I worked full time and went to school, and then moved to get better jobs, and went to job training for certificates in new programming languages and then a Masters

Sounds like where I grew up. The reason I’m poor and unemployed is because all these other people/groups are holding me down. The reason that black person is poor and unemployed is because they’re too lazy to use the bootstraps god gave them.

Related: As a white person who grew up poor and then got my ass educated and into decent field after taking a look at my family (but who has lived in the evil city all her life), I am sick and goddamned tired of poor white people giving up on themselves, refusing to adapt, having hoardes of children who are not

The hiding after childbirth thing:

To be fair, Yale university police did follow protocol and checked ID. Given our current environment with shootings, that is justified.

So, uh.... “Gipped” looks to me like a misspelling of “Gypped” which is sort of totally fucking racist. How ‘bout we edit that to “cheated” and leave racist terms out of it?

But anger is only an objective intellectual assessment when men experience it. When a woman is angry she is hysterical and emotional. A man slamming his fist is strong, a woman slamming her fist is emotional.

He’s apparently not that well-versed in safety. There’s never any reason to pull the trigger on a gun, loaded or not, unless you’re pointing it at something you’re okay putting a hole in.

Yeah, I think we have on of the longest maternity leaves. And yet some mothers are complaining, because sometimes you can’t get your child into state-funded kindergarten right away and might have to pay for some time in a private one, so they’re calling it violation of rights... :) never enough, eh?

I think he said he never “paid” Cohen or kept him on retainer, too. If that’s the case:

But I just feel like you’re assuming out the gate that they’re victims, before getting all the facts. The internet these days is full of fake “stories” - that’s why it’s important to find out what really went down!!

I think “institutional racism” is fine in an academic discussion but I agree with you on “implicit bias”. I say that because I’ve seen people say how can institutions be racist? How can the post office be racist? That kind of thing. Whereas with implicit bias, you have room to educate. There are ironically too many

look, I understand that a black dude’s experience is different from mine. But we’re talking about this specific case, not the black experience in the abstract. And the thing is you just seem completely uninterested in the actual facts of the incident.

????

I think the issue is whether or not that specific store was acting in a discriminatory way, not whether any white people anywhere have been asked to leave a place for not buying an item.

I live in Portland, Oregon, where the two white mothers who drove their kids of the cliff had been part of the progressive community here. On Facebook, after the tragedy, people (mostly women, some of whom I know personally) were engaging in long postings and comment threads describing how terribly “stressed out”

You know what slowly fixes implicit bias and occasionally(but not usually) even fixes some racism.

Well to be fair apparently the reason it came up is because they asked to use the bathroom, and that was when the staff asked if they had purchased anything...

This is a good article.
