As much as the concept is dated, the hardest part of rebooting Queer Eye will be finding another group of five as great at the original Queer Eye quintet. It’s like trying to reboot Friends, a show that largely succeeded because the cast was so great together. Just look at the terrible Queer Eye for the Straight Girl

That’s amazing. It’s a special skill to be able to do that, a skill that requires an admirable amount of empathy (along with the ability to not turn sour when your energy gets drained). Thanks for sharing the story.

I think the bigger stereotype Queer Eye was criticized for was the “fairy godfather” one, which is like the gay male version of the magical negro, a creature that doesn’t really exist outside of dispensing advice that makes straight people’s lives better. But, yes, it did a lot to improve gay visibility.

Thank you. Queer Eye very quickly became dated but it was very helpful for gay visibility at the time. Basically, we weren’t so bad to have around because we can give style advice to straight people, instead of been creeps or sad, lonely/nosy neighbors.

That’s a great comparison, both were efforts that did some good at the time but now we know better. I’m okay with listening to “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” but only if you’re indulging in nostaligia and feeling wonder at how we never thought twice about the song’s patronizing tone, back in the 80s and 90s.

I remember a review of Queer Eye that mostly focused on how the show actually featured good creative work, compared to other makeover shows (and the reviewer previously savaged Trading Spaces) that were more about drama and creating an illusion of good decorating/fashion sense/cooking/etc... and Queer Eye is probably

I remember reading that, as well. I remember looking up “teacup pigs” when I first heard of them and thought they did sound like great animal companions (especially since the ones I saw claimed their pigs grew to 60 lbs, not the 150 Jenkins expected) but I was relieved I never looked further than a few breeders’ web

The answer ther is obvious. Having a male lead is the default. I do think Stairmasternem’s question is valid because getting developers to think away from the default is still a challenge.

These are the times I wish I bookmarked the quote from that Bioware developer who responded to a straight male gamer who felt ‘left out’ because the protagonist could be female and/or gay, literally saying he felt left out because everyone not like him wasn’t left out.

That’s where I will give Trump credit. His skill is as a saleman and he knew how to read the people he needed and told them what they wanted to hear. Last year, I read a few articles analysing his business failures and a lot of them survived (for however long they did survive) on Trump’s salesmanship, apparently he

Clinton Derangement Syndrome is definitely a thing and I remember asking Clinton supporters how they were going to deal with these kinds of attacks. All the Democrats had were to wave it away as Clinton Derangement Syndrome and mysogyny, which is true but doesn’t really do much to get people who have been programmed

I had to unfollow snopes on twitter because the kinds of fake news they were reporting were on the verge of giving me a rage stroke. Everything was written for some unhinged bigot with no grasp of reality, stuff about Obama banning the flag or Target putting urinals in the women’s bathrooms for transwomen. Just seeing

If I weren’t in the greys I wouldn’t engage but that is not fake news. (Did you read the post above? All of it? Did you comprehend it?) It is reporting on something she actually said. You can certainly argue that it was poorly reported and snopes can interpret that way (and I’m actually inclined to agree with that)

It seems like since the day after election day there’s been an army of concern trolls really focused on insisting that there’s some blurry line that we shouldn’t try to draw. It’s the exact thing this post is trying to write about but, naturally, the first comment is another bit of “But where do we draw the line?”

I’ll be surprised if Sarah Paulson doesn’t get that role. Nowadays, the only time Paulson doesn’t get a meaty role on a Murphy anthology is if she’s busy with another Murphy anthology.

I’m hoping it’s similarly redemptive for Lewinsky and for Hillary Clinton (whose decision to stay with Bill has never gotten a nuanced examination, except with fictional stand-ins like Alicia Florrick). However, I also want to see the true sleazeballs of this story (Ken Starr, Newt Gingrich, Matt Drudge, Lucianne

Dratch was on last night’s Man Seeking Woman. At first it looks like a pretty minor cameo but then it takes an amazing direction.

Most of Tina Fey’s performances as Sarah Palin were just taking what Palin said and repeating them with better comedic timing, save for the “I can see Russia from my house!” so they seem to know how to do that, already.

Thanks, that made it all make sense.

If its legally available I don’t pirate it. However, I’m fine if it looks like the owners don’t seem to be interested in selling it to the states. From all appearances, the BBC has decided it’s not worth the trouble to sell the rights to Pointless or Charlie Brooker’s Wipe, so I watch those though other means.
