The majority of chromosome conditions are caused by increases in maternal age (Down syndrome, trisomy 18, trisomy 13, Klinefelter syndrome, etc), while increases in paternal age can be responsible for single gene point mutations (Marfan syndrome, achondroplasia, etc).

Generally chromosome abnormalities are not inherited and do not run in families unless there are translocations present.
