Another fan theory I’ve read is that William somehow dies in the park, and MiB is his robot replacement. But that also begs the question of how a human was killed in Westworld.

According to park protocol humans cannot be killed by gunshots, and we’ve seen MiB take a slew of gunshots as if it is no big deal.

This (and the other comments rebutting my OP) are all fair criticisms. I think the problem for me is that I personally don’t have the emotional energy to fight back against offences like this when we are facing far more draconian threats.
