I suspect that they are going to see how the ratings go first and if it looks good they may give them enough of a budget in Season 2 or 3 to do proper (or at least decent) CGI. Or it could have been an easter egg they have no intention of following through on.

I can't say there were any really bad episodes of 30 Rock. The worst I could say for an episode is "meh" but even those episodes had at least one or two gags that would connect.
