Americans laugh at stupid Russian Air Force pilot.

The strength and thickness of the hull is meaningless. It's the strength of the pressure vessel - the only part of the sub that contains crew - that's important. In the Trieste, that was just the little ball slung underneath. With this submarine, again it seems to be just the crew compartment, which appears to be

Halo? Pfah. Amateurs. Just a small scale model. Ringworlds have a full sized star in the middle. (1970)

@einszweidreiviele: "Reach", maybe... briefly. "Sustain", I doubt... we're not talking Lance Armstong riding one of these. Looks more like 5-7 mph is more likely, seeing the video.

"Until today..."

Oh come on... flipping over the front wheel when braking hard? Just how fast do you think you'll be going on an ungeared single speed bike, anyway? Sorry, I can't see that being a problem. (That said, the first change I'd make to this thing would be to adapt a 3 speed coaster hub to that back wheel....)

@DDigital: A distinction without a meaningful difference in this case. Ham wasn't even close to being an adult at the time, barely larger than a rhesus.

Sorry, Ham wasn't the first.

@rotaryfreakjoe: Wood screws (in all but the shortest lengths) have a smooth, unthreaded section below the head. This is to allow them to draw the upper piece of wood tightly to the lower one. Their threads are also more shallow, have a lower pitch (more threads per inch) and have a different profile than drywall

@TaitRT: MDF and drywall screws deserve each other. They're both useless for real carpentry. :)

@TaitRT: Don't forget about drywall screws!

Having worked for several years in a hardware store and being raised by an aeronautical engineer, these were all quite familiar... but they left out a bunch, too...

On a post in December (with a photo of Challenger rolling out through the fog for her _first_ flight....) I told my story of my remembrance of this day.

@teleclimber: I always wonder how on earth they managed to design, analyze the aerodynamics and structures...

1... 2... 3???

@FordGTGuy: I did say "retired", not "destroyed"... but the chances of the F-14 ever flying again (outside of the Confederate Air Force) are pretty slim. It's getting to be pretty obvious we're on the last or next-to-last generation of manned meat-pilot-on-board fighter aircraft.

@headcheese_bbq: this is why I immediately defecate on my apple products...just so I just which one's mine by scent.
