Their immunity doesn’t allow them to break any law they want. It only allows them some leeway in doing their jobs. A Congressman late for a working session is immune from being ticketed for speeding, for instance, but they aren’t just allowed to break any law they want just because they’re at work.

They have immunity when breaking the law for the purpose of doing their jobs (ex. they can speed on the highway if they’re late to a working session and get away with it) but they don’t have carte blanche to just break any laws they want while they’re at work.

To be fairer to Calhoun than he probably deserves, he was no traitor and never declared war on the US. He died a decade before the Civil War started.

This is actually a good example of what freedom of expression means. People are free to express themselves in art or words but not free from the consequences of how others perceive or react to that expression. True for conservatives and liberals alike. 

That art is objectively bad.

Their actions challenge democracy’s essence and highlight the privilege that white people in positions of power wield: immunity. It is unimaginable that either David or I could enter the Capitol and remove the statue of slavery advocate John C. Calhoun without being accosted and likely arrested.
