The character was a Magical White Guy in the book. They just cast Edris Elba. I wouldn’t get too hung up on the race of the character, he was kind of an engima/blank slate/ManWithNoName type.

I'm not sure that's accurate. It isn't that "he was sick, he didn't hate women." Those are two separate issues.
