Not much of a competitive player myself, but I could see in Mega Man X games, being able to map O to a paddle so I can dash and do other actions without doing the uncomfortable claw.

Got my Dream cast near launch. got a lot of use out of it and those VMUs were awesome. The card function in Sonic Shuffle was my favorite second screen use.

The battery didn't have any impact on the saves, only portable mode.   The screen and save functionality worked without batteries.
