The reason for the dramatic flare is because that was the Star they were using to calibrate the 18 mirrors. Is it a very faint star, and the first image that was taken has 18 different, fainter, dots. Now that all 18 mirrors are adjusted correctly, the Star appears incredibly bright, hence the lens flare.
