Well, the metal isn't actually molten during the welding process. It becomes soft enough that the tons of force using to drive the pieces together squishes it out a bit, but the metal never melts.

In MtG, it's about the card backing. Cards with gold borders (promotional) have different backs that make them illegal in tournaments. White and black borders don't have a bearing on a card's legality.

No one "owns" the copyright, since we don't extend human rights to animals. The courts will either decide that Wikipedia is being pedantic and award Slater ownership of the photos, or rule that they belong in the public domain.
