Yes, the one directed by Jonathon Demme? I liked it better than 12 Years, but it is still not great compared to the book. Beloved is the one of the best book of our times and it deserved better, but I don’t think there’s a filmmaker who could translate it into film properly
I feel like watching black bodies being degraded on screen by white people does the exact opposite of what they wanted to do - humanize the slave experience. To do it properly, I think just showing the physical degradation isn’t enough. It must be integrated with the humanity of the slave being depicted. Steve…
I meant the movie lol! Toni Morrison is my Queen.
Gaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh
early 90’s. Our textbooks had pretty neutral material, but I think I just lucked out with the WORST teachers. It was a pretty confederate loving place, lol. Unfortunately we had just immigrated and we didn’t have the mobility that would’ve let us move to a better place
Good for your wife, dude. I’m glad you got married & she got a visa and you did all the paperwork. OR however that went. I’m sure it was really difficult.
I know, I know. I should’ve stopped myself, ugh
I actually thought it was a better slave narrative than 12 Years. Still not great though. I actually wrote a lengthy ass article partly about it a few months ago in TSB and you should check out the discussion in the comment section
I’m glad!
It’s why I took care to mention “some districts”
Honestly we give The Youths too little credit.
I think the syllabus varies by district, so there’s that
Definitely Yay. We had one Latina teacher, who taught Biology & the rest were white men, save for the English teacher, who was white. She was kind of a dick though, who spent many tedious classes exalting the virtues of Atticus Finch & his Good White Man-ness
What are you saying, that Slaves were illegal immigrants? *confused*
So, I started in a Texas High School during my sophomore year, and it was pretty much the same shit. Even the text itself maybe wasn’t so bad, but the teachers were absolute bastards, who’d frequently tone their lectures with “it wasn’t all that bad” shtick.
you can see Karlie slightly raise her eyebrows lol. I died laughing. I can’t even hate, man. This is great.
Oh honestly I didn’t read the article. My niece was sending me amazing vine updates all through the ceremony. My personal favourites were this one & Bieber crying and ofc, Kanye getting shitfaced
She hasn’t denied it, no?
