I want to avoid a lot of (at least American) genre stuff and catch up on more classic directors and films. So much of the best genre work is inspired by sources outside of that kind of media, so I’ve been making an effort to get into older, foreign, and lauded cinema. Me am gonna be cultured.

I always try to catch up from the previous year for the Oscars, so I end up mixing up what movies came out what year. I also tried this year to catch up on classic films I’ve missed out in general via Netflix and Amazon Prime. And as a result I think I’ve only seen like 6 2019 films (the MCU stuff, Ad Astra, Star Wars,

I actually think he’d be great for a movie about a bunch of bounty hunters, like that one episode of Mando.

I was shocked at how much I loved it. I do not care for the Cartoon Network shows (if you like them, that’s no knock on you. To hate on my taste, please see that other article), but I was super into this. My coworker mentioned that Star Wars works best when it uses other works as a point of reference, not itself.

Well, suffice to say I disagree with your assessment.

I agree that it’s an important part of the franchise’s appeal and I CERTAINLY appreciate the effort and artistry that goes into it, since my friend is a costumer on Mando. And I pass the exterior set for one of the shows (not sure if Mando 2 or Obi-Wan) everyday on the train on my way to work, which never gets old. But

I agree with a lot of your first post, but this has got to be an intentionally obtuse reading of Rey’s situation. Yes, she wants to belong, because she doesn’t feel like she belongs where she is. You don’t need to see a montage of her trying to make friends. You get the idea almost immediately that Rey’s area of Jakku

Incorrect! I said George Lucas doesn’t understand his own creation, but Empire, Last Jedi, ROTJ, Rogue One, and Force Awakens have done an excellent job of resonating and are fantastic stories. I think Mandalorian is not quite on their level, but is very good and super fun. I think it’s helped by the fact that it’s so

Thanks for analyzing this stuff in a way that isn’t just “cheap”. I like a lot of animation, but usually I can’t separate what I like and don’t like other than the writing and performances.

World-building is the least-interesting part of any story to me. Theme and interpersonal relationships are much more interesting.

No, because lightsabers are not that interesting. And why would I want lore? The best Star Wars simply uses that stuff as set dressing to be an homage to Kurosawa, Leone, and war films. The stuff I find most interesting in the films is the philosophy, interpersonal relationships, and cinematography.

I don’t recall The Last Jedi being animated. And I certainly wouldn’t want it ignored ;-)

I really don’t give a fuck if George Lucas thought it up. The man has, time and again, shown that he does not have a handle on why Star Wars resonates or is successful and hasn’t made a good film since 1977. Obviously, regardless of whoever came up with the idea, it’s not actual fanfiction. I’m just saying it’s like

Oh I heartily agree that the EU was mostly garbage.

Thank you for summing up a lot of my issues with the show where I could not. And I think animation is amazing! A lot of people have dismissed me for “not liking that it’s animated”, but the last 3 animated films I’ve watched (all this year), I cried at. And I most definitely think Star Wars should be accessible for

When Anakin was talking to Palpatine maybe?

Yah, sorry dude. I don’t know what else to say when the main character is a problem for me. There’s also the issue of essentially having that relatively guilt-free war by having the bad guys generally be droids, but that’s an issue with Lucas, not the show. I’ll admit that the stuff I’ve seen of the shows are better

My biggest hurdle is fitting in Asokha as Anakin’s apprentice. Just make them friends and it’s all good. But the fact that we already had RotS out and zero reference was made at any time to an apprentice when the plot hinges on whether or not Anakin is ready to be a master, yet the writers wedged her in there is

I should say that some parts I’ve seen are good. I saw the “Rookies” episode of The Clone Wars and a few Resistance episodes which were cheesy, but fine. I think they suffer the issues that most shows do: they run too long in terms of number of seasons and number of episodes per season. As a couple of miniseries (like

I understand that (I don’t watch the Filoni shows, but thought the inclusion of Asokha’s voice in Rise was a cool nod to those fans). I don’t like the idea of the darksaber even existing. It reads very “Oh, this person was like a Jedi AND a Boba Fett, and they invented a super awesome BLACK lightsaber that’s ALSO like
