Symmetry and internals, battery, etc.

Larger battery. I say good. I’ll definitely take more battery at the expense of a little bezel.

Symmetry. I mean, I’m a fan of thinner bezels myself.. But it’s symmetrical like this, and would likely look odd if they shifted the screen down closer to the bottom edge.

i wonder if its a symmetry issue. in the top you need it for the speaker and front facing camera... now if you would cut the bottom bezel off it woulnt look symmetric anymore and might ruin aesthetics

Seriously, why

Do you look at that monstrous bottom bezel and just ask the question, “Why?”

Yet the S7 and the N7 have a larger sensor and wider aperture and somehow are worse than the iPhone, RDF in full effect.

This entire statement makes my head hurt. If the shot is composed well, shallow depth of field creates a much better sense of depth than the longer depth of field you get from a smaller aperture. Those shots were also taken at vastly different focal lengths due to the zoom lens on the Olympus.
