I read it as Matt's overconfidence and as another sign of being an adrenaline junkie. He can't just sit still and recuperate; he's doing the bare minimum to get back on the street. Yeah, the hearing returning was a plot device. But I also thought they at least nodded to Stick's training last season by showing his hearing return while he was doing his meditative healing shtick.
