17s would technically clear the brakes. My issue was the only wheels I could find that fit (based on various retailers’ databases) were ugly as sin. Think wheels that are obviously designed to be 22" chrome monsters sized down to 17/18" + a ton of sidewall. Yuck.

When our Flex EB recently needed new tires, I tried my hardest (but failed) to downsize from 20" to 17", and then also upsize the tires +1 with some all-terrains. I love me some sidewall (as long as there is enough wheel off-set to make it work).
