Wanda never promised mephisto, and it was a silly take in the first place. People couldn't fathom the idea that some secret big bad wasn't responsible so created a show in their minds that was never been shown. 

I really enjoyed this, and felt it worked here, but I also fully cosign your thesis on how Terrible nightmare or mephisto would have been for wandavision.

Yah. It’s tiresome when writers don’t go with a logical, satisfying reveal just because they need to “swerve” the audience. Sometimes predictable is CORRECT.
