You have had to intentionally select POP over IMAP for a while now (IMAP seems to have become the default a while ago), so she would have to set it up this way intentionally. That just seems odd.

This. And most mail programs find the server when you type in the e-mail address, and automatically do IMAP and don’t do POP3 unless you select. Outlook & Mail on Apple products does auto-IMAP, I believe.
