@Tulriss: I'm not so sure it's a lack of competition. Valve is the competition. Heck, so is Impulse, but Valve's the market leader. And the fact of the matter is, Valve is now on Mac, Microsoft's only real competitor for the desktop market.
@kasplat: What successes Steam has had against piracy have little to do with its DRM. They have to do with the fact that Steam made being a legitimate purchaser easier and more convenient than being a pirate.
To put it bluntly, even Valve have done more over the past 5 years to push the agenda of the PC as a viable gaming platform than Microsoft have even attempted.

The summary is completely wrong. STEAM isn't coming to the PS3, Steamworks is. That is a ginormous difference.
