I dunno about hitting it's stride...maybe in Japan and Europe, but in North America it seems it has never been able to get any traction whatsoever to get out of third/last place.

People are getting all sorts of dumb over this because regardless whether it was a "merry band of anonymous internet pranksters" or not...the personal identity information of 20+ million people just got stolen, and it is entirely possible their CC info as well.
