Gainax is actually not involved with this. They ran into financial problems so Anno left and created Studio Kara which is making the Rebuild movies.

Gendo didn’t do it just for that: the basic idea was to allow people to survive third impact by being stuffed into Eva 1, then allowing them to leave if they so wished. That’s basically what happened, except Shinji was the one who got to make that decision, not Gendo.

Anno actually came out a while back and clarified that, while he did receive death threats and angry messages, the volume was overblown by the media. Most of the feedback he got from the ending was positive, with tons of letters of fans telling him how the final episode gave them a more positive outlook on life.

Gainax almost doesn’t have anything to do with Eva anymore since Anno created his own Studio, Studio Khara. Gainax has still the rights to Evangelion I think but if Anno doesn’t want to do another one, he doesn’t have to.

Even if Anno is happy and successful now, there’s always the chance he’s doing Rebuild the way he is now as a final middle finger to the fandom for how they treated him during the original series finale.
