The whole article doesn’t make sense because they’re comparing the average price of an EV, a PHEV, or a normal Hybrid. They’re not actually listing out the premium automakers charge for the same model in a PHEV version, which is much more relevant. For example, the base Prius Prime lists at $5k more than the base

It’s worth noting that usually when you compare a base trim ICE to it’s “base” PHEV counterpart you find that the PHEV comes with extras that you would only get it you opted up to some higher trim packages in the ICE. So the straight price comparison of the two isn’t apples to apples.

You definitely can get away with almost entirely electric for around town! I've posted it before, but my boss has a PHEV, and between home and office charging on a 120V outlet, he only needs to fill up the gas tank once every 1,000 miles

Recently purchased a Tucson PHEV and I love it. 101mpg on a tank since I generally run on electricity most places. It’s been fantastic! I’m not ready for full BEV because I do several 750mi trips a year... which I can do in one day but the added charging time on a full BEV would make it just too long.

We’re almost

the numbers become more plausible if buyers believed that they could get one for $40k, which is less than the current average new car price. but at 2 1/2 times that, most people obviously ran for the hills

Reading a lot of the comments makes me shake my head to oblivion. You could give them 1500 miles range, 1,000 hp, 3 min charging time and a $25,000 dollar price and they WILL moan about something, because it’s electric and they’re just spoiled. And I love my nat asp V8s myself, but this is getting laughable.

take your dam star

Based on existing Lucid charging curves, around 82 minutes.

Damn, my commute is unfortunately 524 miles.

This is a non-starter for me. I need to regularly haul my camper, boat and 3 ATVs uphill through the Rockies 1200 miles each way twice a day.

Yes. (as in all of the above).

The Lucid is very slippery, their motors are known to be very efficient, and a 118 kWh battery is pretty darn beefy (not sure about battery efficiency, though, but I assume it can’t be bad for the numbers its throwing out).

Conversely, we can still put a smaller battery in the same vehicle and run an easy 200+ miles with 500+ lbs saved, aka still way way way more miles than the vast majority of folks drive in a single day.

Also, the Lucid Air GT in its current form weighs no more than a Chevy Tahoe, of which there are hundreds of

Yeah, that huge battery (118 kWh) is about half the size of the Hummer EV / Chevy Silverado EV battery and contains the same amount of energy as 3.5 gallons of gasoline and just knocked out 523 miles on a charge at highway speeds.  Your point?

“From $110,900.”

So they’re not a car company any more, which is the only product they actually make and sell.

It’s like a train, but dumber...

that because you must be braindead to buy one.

Buy stupid car; win stupid prize.

Another brilliant move by Elon! He invented a car so safe that even people who break in don’t get hurt!

zombies lack the fine motor skills to peel an orange, its totally safe.
