I drive a manual Golf R and never had a problem. If your friend has a rev limiter mod that he might need a more aggressive clutch. I am afraid to swap out my clutch because the stock one is so enjoyable to use.

The DSG R accelerates quite a bit faster than the Focus RS.  The manual R needs a software mod.  If your RS is already modded than the mod on the R would not match it but the R is a lot more comfortable to drive.

It can be modded to 350 HP quite easily.  Golf R is meant to be driven conservatively when people want to and driven like mad when people want that.  It is a great all around car like that.

Subaru CVT is unnecessarily complex while the manual is very simple. They may as well be completely different cars. For reliability go with the manual and the only ever needing replacement would be the clutch.
