Well, there was a time when they weren’t so commonplace, and weren’t used in lieu of actual writing, before they became a crutch for many writers.

Its a problem with JJ’s writing in general. He’s so in a rush to capture feelings - which he does well - but doesn’t put in the work to get there organically. He just forces them in there (no pun intended), and they tend to fall apart with any degree of thought after viewing.

Im pretty amazed that Disney-era Lucasfilm let that stuff be in there. They clamped down hard on any stories of strife on the TFA set. That film’s Doc didn’t even mention Ford’s injury, or the production shut down.
