Their ability to sell lots of regulatory credits is a minor, short term revenue stream, but it’s certainly been helpful for them. Basically, it means they can sell Model 3s starting at $38k instead of $40k.

In 2020, Tesla’s revenue was about $32 billion and the revenue from the sales of the various credits was $1.3 billion. Not sure how that counts as a “majority”.
An E34 M5 is reserved.
That is inaccurate. Even the “low power” cameras on Tesla’s (1.2 MP) are not utilized to full potential by the neural net. In fact, no autonomous system uses cameras at full potential — images are parsed at around 16 FPS in greyscale.
On other hand, Tesla’s existing “radar” is insufficient and they are planning an…
The latest versions of Flash that stopped working on Jan. 12th have a built in workaround that isn’t publicized by Adobe (understandably). The process is as simple as creating a text configuration file on the client machine with a few lines and placing it in the right directory. That directory varies per browser.
A massive majority of people that buy Teslas don’t care about, or even see, things like panel gap. If it results in water leaking into the vehicle or wind noise, that might change. But the average Tesla buyer wants a connected device that they can drive. As long as the infotainment is on point, they’ll be happy…
I really appreciate your writing, but giving a crackpot former blogger from TTAC (of all places) the title of “Automotive Journalist” is a little much.
A physical battery disconnect, remotely operated. I had one on my S2000 because I was terrified of the local Honda guys taking it for parts.
Do you know any manufacturer that gives you a free upgrade on a recall? They just replace the faulty part with one that won’t fail, no need to be generous here IMO, other manufacturers aren't either.
This is the new common thought of “just keep throwing tech at it” - this system is craaaazy tedious and would require a huge investment. Why can’t we just continue to use these sensors to make current drivers better? I mean with lane departure, auto braking, etc....what’s wrong with staying on our current level? I…
Times change. Cars are seen as disposable, especially the higher up you go. It’s horrible for both the environment and post-purchase owners, but that’s not a problem capitalism wants to solve. And some would argue can’t solve, as constant purchases are incompatible with being socially and ecologically responsible.
Merce…
The EV question isn’t good vs bad. EVs are the lesser of two evils.
“Can someone help me understand why the heck there’s such a big push (billions and billions of dollars) for autonomous cars?”
I own a viable electric car (Model 3 long range), charging infrastructure is adequate outside of major cities, and I generate most of my power myself. I live in New Hampshire and drove to Pittsburg through many a rural area and I guess you’d be surprised to find out that there are tens of thousands of public charging…
How the fuck is 27% of all emissions “not a lot”?! We are literally talking about megatons here.
Where is SBA to tell us that demand is dropping off a cliff?
Tesla bros are the reason I won’t buy one. They are insufferable.
When the infotainment system on my Civic decides to shit the bed, it takes out my digital dash as well, so not sure having an extra screen really helps much.
When the screen in a Tesla Model 3 crashes, you don’t lose turn signals, just the indication that the turn signals are operating.
As always, where the hydrogen is actually coming from fails to be mentioned. Hydrogen well-to-wheel efficiency is very poor compared to BEV. Around 1/3 the efficiency.
