From the 60's to the 80's the “hype machine” was mostly internal. If Marvel wanted to promote an upcoming storyline you pretty much read about in WITHIN the pages of the comics itself....and whatever fanzines were around at the time. Mainstream news couldn’t have cared less.

Well for sure thats how it works today. Especially since these days media outlets like Entertainment Weekly, Esquire, and others will pick up and spread the news of said event, giving the comic book industry the kind of attention it craves.

Which is why I never not for one second treated this turn of events as anything other than a cynical publicity stunt.
