Sure, at the time. Now, they’ve aged about as gracefully as a can of cottage cheese left out on the counter for a week. They’re an important part of gaming history; I won’t deny that, but one look at these things makes it blatantly obvious they were a product of their times, and that’s all they will ever be. I mean,

Ah yes. The Dark Age of JRPGs. Ultra-tedious grinding, barely-existent narratives, shallow mechanics, and pointlessly convoluted dungeon designs. Good times. Goooooood times.

This looks an AWFUL lot like Minecraft. Is that what they were going for?

Um, hey. Here’s a novel concept, Valve. Instead of furniture, why don’t you spend the money...oh, I don’t know...CURATING YOUR MARKETPLACE.

So...can anyone translate what he’s saying in the thumbnail?

This was crowdfunded too? Shit. And you people thought Mighty No. 9 was a ripoff!

The eyes are pretty girly. Other than that, she nailed it!

For the record, (since this is just that type of game) my dream fanservice moment would be a scene where the team all swaps costumes.

P4D was a pretty solid rhythm game in my opinion, but it’s pure fanservice. You won’t get a lot out of it unless you know Persona 4 REALLY well.

Just when I thought I had finally run out of good 3DS games. :)

Better fake girls than real girls.

Eh. Not my cup of tea, but whatever floats one’s boat.

It also doesn’t help matters that gay characters are very rarely portrayed as actual characters. A lot of fictional media includes what’s known as the “token gay” who’s only there for the sake of (MASSIVE AIR QUOTES) “diversity”. The issue with this is that they don’t really contribute anything aside from being gay.

I can’t tell if Nintendo is going to start World War III or prevent it.

Well said. The problem isn’t so much that retro-inspired games exist, it’s that EVERY OTHER GAME THAT COMES OUT involves pixel art in some way, and the market is starting to get oversaturated.

I don’t think so. These seem like they serve the same purpose as those video ad displays in Walmart.

An accurate depiction of Waluigi.

More importantly, God only knows how The Pokemon Company is gonna recover from this PR nightmare. Pokemon Go fans are NOT forgetting this for a long time!

The only concern I have is how much all of this will affect load times. BBS 0.2 ran smoothly enough in action, but bear in mind that was ONLY AFTER a massive front-load!

Which is unfortunate because a good number of smaller developers have proven themselves more than capable of making a quality JRPG. Atlus and Level-5 being the most prominent examples.
