I believe the association is due to at least 50 church burnings committed by Norwegian black metal bands in the early 90's. They burned down quite a few very old historical churches I believe as well. If you are ever bored, read up Norwegian black metal bands in the early 90s as it was pretty crazy!
Just out of curiosity...why the association of black/death metal with church burnings? Even actual Satanic worshippers deify Lucifer, as lord of the light. It’s parallel to, not in opposition with, Christian beliefs.
