They changed the transmission pretty late in the design cycle and fooled customers the entire time. Both the engine and electric motor have a connection to the wheels, much like a mild hybrid. However, the fact that its gas engine assists the electric motor (and not the other way around) give the Volt the edge over

I love going on that train! $8 for a non-crowded, quiet, comfortable 7-minute ride that would take about 40 minutes on the road (or 2 hours in traffic).

Focus ST is definitely faster on a track and is an order of magnitude better on road trips. Fiesta ST is definitely more chuckable, though, and more exciting as lower speeds. To each his own, there are no right or wrong answers to this question!

Some good coworkers were there this weekend, including one such person with 112,000 miles in his blue F430. He tracks that car nearly every other weekend, so those are definitely not 112,000 gentle miles...

Buy more cheap properties? I'm still trying to save enough for a down-payment for my first home. Of course, in the Bay Area, that means saving $700,000 and buying a $550,000 1100 sq- ft. house with said $700,000 (so you can beat all the other above-asking-price offers).

Buying a new car is much like having a baby of your own, created by your own DNA. It's exactly what you want, optioned with the things that you think you need, and not optioned with the stuff that's a waste of money (sometimes).

All the better reason to get a Focus or Fiesta ST instead! Both the insurance company and the police just see a compact or midsize hatchback. Hopefully us drivers don't turn into speed-seeking dicks on the road, ruining it for everyone else.

Why are we OK with letting our second largest purchase to depreciate? For the same reason we buy houses that are way too large. It's not about pure function, it's about how we want to spend a large portion of our lives sitting inside a metal box. Cars for many people are more than just transportation devices. They

Sometimes you just need to buy a new car because the new ones are so much better.

Why couldn't have they just pumped in engine noise through an actual physical sound tube instead of a microphone+DSP+speaker setup? The 2.0 Ecoboost in the Focus ST sounds great with the pumped-in noise (much like the BRZ) without being loud all the time, they should have just done something like that.

Totally agree with you there.

These are totally awesome. I opted for the larger Navigator Duffel so I can travel for 2 weeks with winter clothes, but a convertible duffel bag/backpack is awesome. Timbuk2 build quality is also top-notch.

It has wheels, so it's for the weak, selfish, and lazy.

Since they put the engine further back, they must have been able to put the battery back up front where it should be.

Goddammit, I was going to start saving money for a house, but now I'm going to save money for this car instead.

Damn, I just need my wife's car to die soon-ish so she'll have to get this car. The manual transmission-ed version, of course, because she knows better.

Every time I get back to the US I turn into an arrogant asshole driver for a week because of how everyone drives in Shanghai, especially with pedestrians. But I agree with Shanghai - pedestrians should yield to cars, not the other way around.

I go to Shanghai quite a bit for business. Their infrastructure is amazing. They have the largest metro system in the world (over 330 miles of track), elevated highways are well-designed and are everywhere, there's more than enough water to go around, and the Chinese are very good at building upwards instead of
