I'll say that from 1 to Black Flag is night and day if you ignore everything in between. I really enjoy Black Flag actually, partially because (and I haven't beaten it yet so I'm not sure how true this is on a full playthrough) they kind of ignore the modern day part. I agree that it didn't really emerge the way I thought it would. I didn't mind Ezio, but the entire present day alien/God thing was more bizarre than compelling. They let the story get away from them a bit, when really they could have not included weird God beings, and still had a hell of a narrative.
