Funny, I thought the exact same thing when Mike Watt was talking about Zen Arcade on Sound Opinions. I never picked up on a story.

Sound Opinions
You know, I like this show for the most part, but man do the hosts rub me the wrong way with their aging hipster attitudes toward bands who aren't quite as hip (and critic-safe) as the Velvet Fucking Underground. Hey, I LIKE Steely Dan and The Cars. Jerks.
I must have missed the joke due to multitasking at work. Anyone care to re-cap?
I still like several songs on More Adventurous, but I seem to remember The Execution of All Things having some of the most awkward, unnatural profanity I've ever heard in music.
I was surprised to see 2001 get picked, as I didn't remember it being a particularly great year (despite graduating high school), and Genevieve's picks didn't change my mind. 2002 was WAY better.
I've always only been able to enjoy the White Stripes in small doses. Whenever I try sitting through a full album, every song starts to sound the same to me.
"Carolla is that rarest of breeds…someone with a lot of somewhat unenlightened views who actually has a brilliant sense of humor."
Well, it probably doesn't help that most of these podcasts are based out of L.A., so the number of podcast-level comedians is kind of finite. Maybe Never Not Funny or Comedy Bang Bang should re-locate to NYC for a season to score some new guests.
I've enjoyed the handful of Larry Sanders episodes I've seen, but yeah, I can't help but get the feeling that it was a lot more interesting in 1992, especially when that brand of comedy was fairly new. I did enjoy the interview though.
Hey, at least Malkmus got rid of that hideous cowboy mustache he had a few years ago.
1. Pig Lib
2. Real Emotional Trash
3. Face the Truth
4. s/t
I didn't listen to the episode, but I get the impression that Byrne is into the Nick DiPaolo school of "disenfranchised white guy" comedy?
Glad to see this one too. I only have Good Ol' Boys, and I've been meaning to dig deeper into his good stuff.
@ginsu sludge - Wikipedia tells me Mama wasn't recorded until 1982, and Wikipedia never lies. It's a damn weird album, definitely miles away from what they'd end up doing once Andy joined the band. Either way, it warms my heart whenever someone brings up Nomeansno.
Obviously, I agree (well, aside from some of the Flo & Eddie stuff), but Zappa is probably your quintessential "love him or hate him" artist. I love 95% of his stuff, but I don't really begrudge anyone for not liking him. He's definitely not for everyone.
I've read enough music articles here to get the impression that the AV Club, at best, is pretty apathetic toward Zappa. Oh well.
There's no special place in my heart for 2001, so count me out.
Nah, "Cities" is fine. It's just that the live versions are much better. The only weak song for me is "Electric Guitar."
I like Entertainment, but it's another one of those records that I'm just never in the mood to listen to. It's just so relentlessly humorless and political. Mark Prindle pretty much nailed it: "More fun than a barrel of Marxists"
I'm not sure where it would rank on my list for 1979, but it's hands-down my favorite XTC album.
