I think the appeal of the book was in the way it used all manner of geeky trivia, and building a scenario where all those memories actually become USEFUL.

I think the movie stands to actually be much better than the book, provided the producers manage to license everything they need to (a challenge, but with Spielberg directing and the likelihood of being a massive blockbuster, rights holders will doubtless be convinced).
