The old-school champ cars were pretty bonkers. 900 horsepower, tons of aero grip, no power steering. They pulled so many sustained Gs at Texas in 2001 that they had to cancel the race because of the risk of drivers passing out mid-corner.

I watched the NBC broadcast, and I believe they spoke in favor of it. Red Bull’s version doesn’t obstruct driver egress - neither do the Mercedes and Ferrari, as far as I can tell. I’d rather have that than Alonso’s head exposed to that tire barrier the way it was. I can’t imagine a design that limited driver escape…

Seeing that twisted chunk of car at first really made my stomach turn. Was so relieved to see him climb out. I wonder how close he was to the wall when the car finally came to rest... The extra head protection can’t come soon enough.
