@f3rg: Robotic smudge tool. That makes sense. BTW, Google Japan really needs to look into it's Robot Labor Laws. Poor guy was forced to stay up all night smudging and then had to be up early the next morning to make more routes.

I'm not sure about the technicalities behind the workings of street view, but in most street view photos there exists the blurring out of faces, license plates, the actual Streetview car and other such personal content. In some of these pictures, a similar task is done.
