It's hard to compare countries. I'd venture that Switzerland's per capita income level does more to prevent crimes than firearms. Gun violence is more a symptom of poverty, lack of education and a whole host of other issues. Then again, those are really tough things to fix.

You are right. You need the classes and training for a firearm to be effective. If you haven't fired off hundreds of rounds until it is second nature, you aren't going to be effective in a stressful situation.
