Yeah, but he's always an awful person. It was never excessively unpacked like it has been recently. Despite Ricks personality being incredibly dark, it was equally fleeting and topical most of the time. This seemed forced to me.

I second that. As I stated above, even since season one I feel the show has lost charm. It's no longer the witty science adventure coated in existential banter laced with nihilistic undertones. I don't know if 'shit' is the right word, but there is some lack of "charm" that I so dearly miss from season one. Season 2 had a few episodes that were zany and goofy, but 3 so far hasn't been overly impressive.
