The reduction of build configurations seems to come and go in waves, depending on the need to control costs. Honda and Toyota used to offer very few configurations, but now the new Pilot is offered in 6 trim levels and the RAV4 has 10 (!).

I don’t think it means less time in the assembly line, I think it means shorter overall lead time from the time an order is placed. If the base model used a lot of unique parts that weren’t shared across other trim levels it may have been challenging to keep sourcing them in a timely manner.

Apart from the gaudy red steering wheel inserts, I disagree. I drove a G8 back in the day and for it’s time it had pretty good looking interior, especially for a GM product.

My guess is, compared to retail locations there is less incentive to partner with the bare bones state-operated rest stops. You know, the ones with a vending machine, a restroom, some benches and maybe an Information booth.
