China has a facial tracking/ID system.  The system manages your behavior and can affect real things such as credit rating.  Some of the protesters will destroy cameras and cover their faces to avoid retribution in this way. 

The key difference with all of this is who they are speaking out against.  There are a few liberal politicians that are being hypocritical about this as well.
