Just for scientiffic purposes I’d like to contribute that getting “Hey’d” is not exclusive to NYer or Americans. I have been “Hey’d” by two foreign lads, it was just more like “howiya,” instead.

That SAE chapter in Oklahoma got it all wrong... I went to UHA, and two of my best male friends- both black— were outstands members of SAE, among many other black members, gay members, white members, no one cared.
